Chinese AI startup 'DeepSeek' is shocking the global AI ecosystem by unveiling an ultra-low-cost, high-performance generative AI. Accordingly, the government as well as many companies are planning to accelerate the pace of AI development.
According to industry sources on the 5th, Kakao (035720) announced a strategic collaboration with OpenAI on the 4th and began expanding its generative AI business in earnest. Kakao plans to develop a hyper-personalized AI service by integrating OpenAI technology into its AI platform, Kanana.
Canana is a customized AI service that takes into account the user's situation and context, and completed its internal closed beta test (CBT) at the end of last year.
According to WiseApp Retail, an app and retail analysis service, as of the 4th week of January this year, DeepSeek's domestic weekly user count was approximately 1.21 million, ranking second after ChatGPT (4.93 million).
According to a report by mobile data analytics firm Sensor Tower, the DeepSearch AI assistance app recorded 16 million downloads in just 18 days after its launch, surpassing ChatGPT's 9 million downloads in the same period.

Jaesik Choi, a professor at KAIST AI Graduate School, said, "In our country, we are weak in focusing on bilingualism enough to provide global services for learning purposes only. Even if we run like DeepSearch, it will take at least 2-3 years."
He continued, "Generative AI has a wide range of fields beyond just large language models (LLMs). It would be a good idea to consider developing generative AI that can be used in fields such as music and manufacturing," adding, "Commercialization globally could be a key to our country's competitiveness."
