The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it will establish a public-private collaboration system to help with the rapid commercialization of national strategic technologies.
On the morning of the 9th, the Ministry of Science and ICT held the ‘National Strategic Technology Future Dialogue’ at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul with the attendance of representatives of major companies, universities, and research institutes in the field of national strategic technologies.
The Future Dialogue was attended by Minister of Science and ICT Yoo Sang-im, Seoul National University President Yoo Hong-rim, KAIST President Lee Kwang-hyung, POSTECH President Kim Sung-geun, and Korea Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning President Oh Tae-seok. From the industry, the Korea Industrial Technology Promotion Association Chairman Koo Ja-gyun, LG Science Park CEO Jeong Su-heon, Hanwha Aerospace CEO Son Jae-il, CJ Bioscience CEO Chun Jong-sik, and POSCO Holdings Future Technology Research Institute Director Kim Ki-soo.
Minister Yoo said, “The Future Dialogue was initiated to bring together the capabilities of industry, academia, and research amid rapid changes in the domestic and international environment.” He added, “Along with the announcement of the US’s reciprocal tariffs, the competition for technological hegemony is spreading across industries due to the AI revolution, and economic and industrial difficulties are becoming a reality, so securing science and technology sovereignty based on national strategic technologies is urgent.”
The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to discuss ways to foster talent and improve systems so that next-generation growth engines can be discovered centered on national strategic technologies through the Future Dialogue. The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to expand next year’s budget for national strategic technologies from this year’s 6.4 trillion won and improve related systems such as technology tax credits.
It also announced that it will create a research cooperation system among industry, academia, research, and government and a consistent and long-term R&D support system that tolerates failures to help spread and commercialize national strategic technologies. It also decided to establish a plan to attract overseas talent through the 5th Basic Plan for the Cultivation and Support of Science and Technology Talents, which is currently being established.
